We had to say goodbye this week to a dear man and a great Friend to Enchanted Rock, Bill Lindemann.

A favorite campfire program at Enchanted Rock was “Whose that Hooting in the Woods?” Families learned that a Barred Owl can be recognized by its distinctive call, “who, who, cooks for you?” among other great owl facts. Our presenter for these programs was Bill Lindemann.

Bill was the center of most of the programs or progress in the natural world in Fredericksburg. He and his group from the Friends of Lady Bird Nature Center built the trails at Lady Bird City Park and produced the nature festival, Wings Over the Hills. He was also instrumental in building the trail at Cross Mountain Park. The Rotary Club, along with Bill created the Barons Creek Trail at Fort Martin Scott and the bird blind on “Lake Fredericksburg.” The bird blind was one of his long time desires. Bill was a famous birder and guided many birding trips as well as doing bird surveys for landowners. He served on the board of the Hill Country Land Trust and the Hill Country Historical Foundation, and was passionate about land conservation and appreciated by landowners for his knowledge.

I was camped next to Bill in Davis Mountains State Park once and didn’t even know it. He was scanning leaves and flowers into a computer for a guide on the plants of the Trans-Pecos and I recognized him from a distance by his UT baseball cap always sitting a askew on his head. He was a incorporating director of the Hill Country Historical Foundation, where I first got to know him. He also wrote a birding column for the Kerrville Daily Times and the Fredericksburg Standard for many years, educating thousands of people on the birds of the Hill Country. Bill is the one you went to when you wanted to identify a bird, a plant, a dragonfly, or a flower.

Bill was a Friend to all, and he will be missed

  1. Bill was such a beloved man and a great human almanac! He was always smiling and loved all he did to support the natured. Sorry to hear of his passing back in early 2022. RIP.
